Discovering the wonder of Nordic-Japanese at Pantechnicon, Belgravia

Pantechnicon-Motcomb

Oh, hello. And what a Summer it’s been… What strange times we’ve all had, and are still having… I definitely still feel very much as though I’m stuck in the middle of some kind of normal and lockdown, but somehow I have acclimatised to this inbetweeny vibe more easily than I thought I would…

Yesterday I ventured out to Pantechnicon – Belgravia’s new Japanese/Nordic dining and retail concept space, which has been described as the industry’s biggest launch this side of lockdown. This was my very first lunch OUT OUT since February and I could not have wished for a more special, unique and beautiful place to visit to break my out-and-about dry spell – I was there during its soft launch, however the doors will be well and truly open to everyone on the 22nd Sept…

Most of the buildings on Motcomb Street burned down in 1874, however this façade survived and is now Grade II listed.

I was welcomed with a delicious mocktail on arrival…

“Pantechnicon is a home for a playful celebration of Nordic and Japanese creativity and craftsmanship – a story told through food, drink, design and experiences. Come, our doors are open”.

Set over 5 floors, there are several dining/relaxing areas and some exquisite retail spaces as well, which have been masterfully and thoughtfully curated. There are over 150 Japanese and Nordic fashion brands throughout the retail space, as well as wonderful independent lifestyle brands, such as Tokyo Bike.

These cushions from Form & Refine were so unbelievably beautiful – I think I may have a cushion habit!

As we walked and explored the 5 floors, we discovered Eldr, the pan-Nordic restaurant (Eldr means ‘fire’ in old Norsk) an intimate Japanese dining gallery, a specialist bottle shop and bar, and the UK’s first permanent outlet of Café Kitsuné. We finally made our way up to the Roof Garden, which is where we were having lunch… and all we could say was WOW…

Roof Garden at Pantechnicon

The Roof Garden is stunning – it is a bar and dining space for all seasons with a fully retractable electric glass roof and all-day small plate and snack menu from the kitchen at Eldr (the pan-Nordic restaurant on the floor below). The garden is designed by Finnish horticulturalist and garden designer, Taina Suonio and boasts some of the best roof space in the area with an expansive south-facing terrace…. fabulous doesn’t begin to cut it.

The meal was exceptional and both Gem (my pal) and I got a bit emotional. To be looked after so beautifully and to eat such exquisite dishes almost made us feel as though we’d been transported to a magical land somewhere, far away from the troubles of the world… it felt hopeful, joyous and deeply calm.

There is an extensive Icelandic cocktail list… but it was the Plum & Redcurrant mocktail for me 🙂

Pantechnicon is a very special corner of London and ever so easy to get to – I walked from Knightsbridge station through the wide leafy streets of Belgravia…. and it is a place I will be telling everyone I know to visit.

It’s a tranquil and beautiful haven, which couldn’t have arrived in London at a more fitting time.

We all need a bit of beautiful. And we all need a space to breathe, to marvel at design and to appreciate the wonder of simplicity and spectacular Nordic & Japanese craftsmanship.

I can’t wait to return.
